I just rewatched The Royal Tenenbaums for the billionth time, and god is this film great. The first time I saw the film I didn't really care for it, because it didn't seem to have a point, but every time I watch it after that, I pick up more depth and purpose, and the movie just gets better.

Wes Anderson's directing style is odd but interesting. With very few exceptions, all of the actors' lines are delivered in an almost deadpan manner, yet the acting doesn't feel wooden and the characters' emotions, as complex as they can get given the plot, are generally fairly clear. The camera work, too, is quirky. All of this makes the film feel oddly surreal and magical, even though its plot and setting are realistic enough.  Read more »

After spending my Fourth of July indoors with Amber (we were both feeling under the weather), I stopped into Best Buy on my way home and picked up a new harddrive, keyboard, and mouse. The harddrive was a Western Digital Caviar SE 160GB SATA hard drive, 7200RPM and 8MB cache. The keyboard and mouse combo was the Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 1000 package. Both were on sale.

Oh, and I also picked up the special edition DVD of Napoleon Dynamite, which was also on sale for $6.99. Sweet.

After three years off the air, Fox has decided to begin producing more episodes of their hit animated sci-fi comedy, Futurama. Mirroring a move pulled off by Family Guy two years ago, the long-cancelled series will be making a comeback in 2008.  Read more »

No CD today, since I bought three last week. Don't expect one next week either.

In other news, I spent the weekend with Amber watching my newly purchased Lost - The First Season DVD box set. I've already seen the first season, but she hadn't, so we just had a marathon in her basement. It was definitely a do-nothing weekend for us, and with the rain coming down all day Saturday and most of Sunday, it was the perfect weekend for it too.

Also, a new version of Drupal -- which powers this website -- is coming out soon, and I've set up a sandbox site to test it out. So far everything is working well, so I'll be upgrading the main site when the new version is officially released. You may experience some downtime in the meanwhile.

Sorry for the delay in updates. I didn't get a chance to pick up last week's CD until today. The CD is Rush - Moving Pictures (link), and it's off of my wishlist. For the moment I'm buying older music that I already know I like.

I also bought the Criterion Edition of Akira Kurosawa's Ikiru, which is arguably his best movie, as far as depth and camera work. The subject matter isn't Kurosawa's normal fare: rather than covering samurai period stuff this time, Kurosawa chose to delve into post-WWII Japan, ripping into the heavily beaurocratic new government and at the same time taking some time to explore the meaning of life. It's a beautiful film, one of Kurosawa's top five (if not number one), but also probably one of his most underrated, simply because of the lack of guys with swords killing stuff. I mean, yeah, guys with swords (especially samurai swords) are pretty cool, especially when they're killing stuff, but sometimes you've just got to make a movie about life. I've probably said it before, but it doesn't hurt to repeat: Kurosawa is an amazing director. Just watch it already.
