8bitpeoples are we

8bitpeoples are we

I've been digging on this weird, non-mainstream type of music lately, made by several bands in an organization called the 8bitpeoples. It's hard to describe exactly who or what the 8bitpeoples are, except that their music relates in one way or another to video games and my generation's collective memory of parts of the 80s zeitgeist. It's better to just quote you from their mission statement:

The 8bitpeoples first came together in 1999 as a collective of artists sharing a common love for classic videogames and an approach to music which reflected this obsession. Our primary interests were to provide quality music for free and most importantly to have fun. In the years since, we have grown in rank and expanded our goals.

Some of the albums don't really do anything for me, but a lot of them do. I don't know what it is, but somehow they tap into my memories and provide psychological stimulation as well as audio. The end result is interesting at the very least, enlightening at best, and if nothing else, it's free. Check it out already!

strange indeed

strange indeed

There's an indie film coming out soon called We are the Strange. The director/producer of the film, M dot Strange, describes it as "Monsters Inc meets The Nightmare before Christmas inside of a retro Japanese videogame", which right there should be an indication of just how strange this film is. If you don't believe me, check out the trailer, up now on YouTube. According to M dot Strange, the film will be released for public consumption (means as of yet undetermined) sometime in 2007.

21 text messages later...

21 text messages later...

In China on Sunday, a man returned $630 and a cell phone that he had stolen from a woman after she sent him 21 gentle text messages. It sounds pretty crazy, but here's the story:

Pan, a schoolteacher, had her purse stolen this Friday as she was cycling home. Rather than calling the police, Pan sent him a text message using a friend's phone. "I'm Pan Aiying, a teacher from Wutou Middle School. You must be going through a difficult time. If so, I will not blame you." She got no response to that message, but she sent another message telling the thief to "keep the 4,900 yuan if you really need it, but please return the other things to me. You are still young. To err is human. Correcting your mistakes is more important than anything." Nineteen text messages later, she had all but given up. But then Sunday morning she found a package in front of her door containing her purse and everything in it. In the package there was a note, which read, "dear Pan: I'm sorry. I made a mistake. Please forgive me. You are so tolerant even though I stole from you. I'll correct my ways and be an upright person."

Pretty heartwarming, neh? I guess I'm in one of those feel-good moods lately. Here's the original news story in case you're interested.

(yeah, that image has very little to do with the story. ring ring ring ring ring ring ring bananaphone!)

WTS Sealand!

Apparently, the supposed micronation of Sealand is up for sale. Apparently the people behind The Pirate Bay want to purchase it. What a strange, strange world we live in.

Video games and... Coke?

I saw the strangest thing today on the internet. First I followed an Ars Technica journal entry to Youtube where I saw a video of a Coca-Cola commercial set in a video game world eerily similar to Grand Theft Auto. Then, following the links on Youtube, I found a Coke commercial (in Japanese) featuring the settings and characters from my favorite Final Fantasy game, FFIX. Then, after that, I followed another link to yet another commercial (this time in Chinese) featuring characters and settings from World of Warcraft. What the hell? When did that happen? A Hole

(well, two, actually)

What a strange place is this Internet we have created. Today I have discovered, through wandering the 'Net, two stories about the love between two different men and their holes. Before we continue, kindly wipe those dirty thoughts from your mind, good sirs and ladies, because I'm not talking about that kind of hole.

These two stories, though different in length, tone, and purpose, both involve a testosterone-enhanced obsession with the subterranean.  Read more »
