You Park Like an Asshole
Submitted by Trigear on Sat, 01/20/2007 - 12:02am.Really, you do.
Ok, well, you might.
I found this cool website (through Digg, by way of Ars Technica). The site focuses on people who can't park, and what you can do to let them know how you feel.
DM of the Rings

While doing research (*cough* Google *cough*) for a D&D campaign I'm working on, I stumbled across this hilarious web comic called DM of the Rings. The comic's premise, as stated by the author:
Lord of the Rings is more or less the foundation of modern D&D. The latter rose from the former, although the two are now so estranged that to reunite them would be an act of savage madness. Imagine a gaggle of modern hack-n-slash roleplayers who had somehow never been exposed to the original Tolkien mythos, and then imagine taking those players and trying to introduce them to Tolkien via a D&D campaign.
Basically, it follows a group of roleplayers playing through a campaign based on Lord of the Rings. And they don't know what Lord of the Rings is, so their experience of Lord of the Rings is tempered by their experience with D&D, instead of the other way around. It had me literally laughing out loud several times. Check it out if you're into Lord of the Rings, D&D, or just a nerd.
Video games and... Coke?
Submitted by Trigear on Sun, 08/13/2006 - 11:03pm.I saw the strangest thing today on the internet. First I followed an Ars Technica journal entry to Youtube where I saw a video of a Coca-Cola commercial set in a video game world eerily similar to Grand Theft Auto. Then, following the links on Youtube, I found a Coke commercial (in Japanese) featuring the settings and characters from my favorite Final Fantasy game, FFIX. Then, after that, I followed another link to yet another commercial (this time in Chinese) featuring characters and settings from World of Warcraft. What the hell? When did that happen? (videos after the jump) Read more »

Scam busters!
Submitted by Trigear on Fri, 06/30/2006 - 1:03am.We all know about the 419 money transfer scam. They usually start with you getting an e-mail from the son of the former dictator of some remote African nation, who has just been deposed and now needs to get his vast fortune out of the country as quickly as possible, and for a small cut of the profits, he wants your help. These scams are lucrative in some places, especially Nigeria, South Africa, and Amsterdam, and they net billions of dollars a year in revenue. If you don't know about them, you should learn, as the scam is a lot more common than you'd think, takes many forms, and sometimes results in physical harm or even death to the victim. I've gotten about a hundred of those letters over the years, via e-mail or post, and I know many others who get them often too. If you're lucky (and smart), you haven't fallen for this one.
There's a website out there, 419 Eater, dedicated to bringing down these scammers. They start off by baiting the scammers, stringing them along by pretending to be suckers, and turning the tables and scamming the scammers. All the while, they're getting whatever personally identifiable information they can on the scammers, which they then report to the authorities working on stopping the problem. Meanwhile, they've got an education program set up to make sure that everyone knows about these scams. Read more »
